First, is college. If you are looking to be successful as an HR Professional you need to be sure you get a solid education in college including both liberal arts and business courses. You need to be sure you learn about people, and working with people, as well as about how business works. In HR your customers are going to be your company's future employees and managers.
Second, you need to be sure to get training in college to be comfortable with technology. Not only e-mail and word processing but to be really aware of how computer systems work. No matter what job you eventually land in HR you will need to have a good idea of the technical possibilities or you will not be ready.
Third, you need to get some practical experience working with people. You should find a summer job that deals with the public, or work in a group that supports internal employees.
